The Police Explorer program is an exciting career development program sponsored by the Longview Police Department which provides young men and women the opportunity to learn about the possible career choices available in law enforcement today. Explorers are afforded the opportunity to learn and become acquainted with police techniques and procedures, both in classroom and field environments, including actual "hands-on" field experience. Many former Police Explorers have gone on to law enforcement careers at all levels, including working for their local police department or with State and Federal agencies.

Designed by the Boy Scouts of America, the Explorer program helps to build good character, promotes good citizenship and to develop personal and mental fitness. The program gives youth the means and opportunity to share thoughts and ideas with others their age, as well as with caring adults who share their time with them

Explorer Academy

Longview Police Explorer Post 201 offers a week-long Explorer Academy each year during the summer months. Topics of instruction include:

•     History of Policing
•     Radio Procedure
•     Basic Patrol Procedures
•     Report Writing
•     Texas Penal Code
•     Traffic Law
•     Crime Prevention
•     Accident Investigation
•     Crime Scene Investigation
•     Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs
•     Arrest & Search Techniques
•     Juvenile Law
•     CPR & First Aid
•     Courtroom Procedures

At the conclusion of the Explorer Academy, Explorers are required to pass a written exam covering the topics of instruction.


Post Activities

Post 201 Explorers have been called on to assists the Police Department in various activities including crime prevention events, parades, special event traffic management and during emergencies. The Post also competes in Regional and National Explorer competitions with the more than 2,200 Law Enforcement Posts nationwide.

Explorers that meet the set requirements are allowed to ride in uniform on patrol with a police officer twice per month. While riding, Explorers are allowed to assist with traffic direction at accident scenes, assist with securing crime scenes and a host of other opportunities to learn and practice the duties of police officers. Requirements

Teens and young adults interested in becoming a Police Explorer must meet the following requirements:

•   Must be at least 14 years of age but no older than 21 years;
•   Must maintain a minimum "C" average in school grades;
•   Must not have been arrested;
•   Have good moral character; and
•   Must register with the Boy Scouts of America.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it cost anything to join?
There is an initial, one-time fee of $10.00 for registration. Other associated costs with joining the Explorer Post have been taken care of by Post Sponsors. This includes insurance and uniforms for the members. Some Explorers choose to purchase additional equipment, i.e. flashlight, boots and leather gear.

If this is a Boy Scouts program, can girls join?
Yes. Young women have always been a part of the Boy Scouts of America.

Who is the Advisory Staff?
Post Advisors are police officers and other volunteers and employees of the Longview Police Department. Advisor training is provided by the Boy Scouts of America. Currently, the Post 201 Advisors are:

I'm thinking about joining, can I come to a meeting to find out more?
Sure. You are welcome to attend any of the regular meetings. Coming to a meeting is an excellent way to find find out more about Exploring and Post 201, meet the Advisors and talk to other Explorers about their experiences.

Can I bring a friend?
Of course. Our new Explorers often bring along a best friend, classmate or even a brother or sister. You can even bring along a parent so they can see what the program is like.

What do I need to do to join?
Basically, just come to a meeting. If you meet the requirements listed above and decide to join, you will need to complete an application. You can obtain an application from any of the Post Advisors. As mentioned above, there is a one-time $10.00 registration fee.

I have other questions. Who can I contact?

Remember, however, that the Advisors are full-time Longview Police Officers and may or may not be on-duty when you call and, if they are, they may not be in a position to return your call immediately.
