Assistant Chief Lonnie Smith
Assistant Chief Lonnie Smith graduated in 1969 from John Tyler High School and then served in the U.S. Navy from 1969-1973. After serving in the Navy, he attended the University of Texas at Tyler and graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice. He also has an Associate of Arts degree from Tyler Junior College .
Assitant Chief Smith began his career with the Police Department in March of 1983, was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1991and was promoted to Lieutenant in 2004. During his tenure with the department he has served in the Patrol Division, Narcotics Division, Street Crimes Apprehension Team, and the Investigative Services Division as a supervisor over the Crimes Against Persons Division. Prior to his promotion to Lieutenant, he was the Supervisor over the Crimes Against Persons Division. Assistant Chief Smith has served on various departmental committees, has received numerous commendations and was selected by his peers as the “Supervisor of the Year 2003”.
Assistant Chief Smith was promoted to his current rank effective April 14, 2008 and is also a 2007 graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
